In a timely TED talk delivered on April 9, 2025, technologist Tristan Harris posed a question that challenges the entire AI industry: What if the way we're deploying artificial intelligence isn't inevitable, but rather a choice we're actively making? As the co-founder of the Center for Humane Technology and a long-time advocate for ethical technology deployment, Harris drew compelling parallels between today's AI rollout and the catastrophic implementation of social media platforms that led to what he describes as "a totally preventable societal catastrophe."


The Social Media Warning We Ignored

Eight years ago, Harris stood on the TED stage warning about the dangers of social media. He cautioned that business models maximizing engagement would lead to addiction, distraction, and mental health issues. Looking back, he notes how society first doubted these consequences, then dismissed them as a "moral panic," and finally accepted them as "inevitable."

But Harris emphasizes that nothing was inevitable about the negative impacts of social media. We had choices—specifically around engagement-based business models—that could have created a completely different outcome. Today, he sees us making the same mistake with AI, except the stakes are exponentially higher.

AI: A Country of Superhuman Geniuses

What makes AI different from other technologies? According to Harris, "AI dwarfs the power of all other technologies combined." Unlike advancements in specific fields like biotech or rocketry, which don't necessarily advance each other, AI represents a fundamental advance in intelligence itself—"the basis for all scientific and technological progress."

Harris borrows Dario Amodei's metaphor: imagine AI as "a country full of geniuses in a data center." Not just any geniuses—a million Nobel Prize-level minds that:

  • Don't eat
  • Don't sleep
  • Don't complain
  • Work at superhuman speed
  • Work for less than minimum wage

To put this in perspective, Harris notes that the Manhattan Project employed roughly 50 Nobel Prize-level scientists for about five years, resulting in nuclear weapons. What could a million such scientists create, working non-stop at superhuman speeds?

The Possible vs. The Probable

Harris acknowledges the immense potential benefits of AI: unprecedented abundance through new antibiotics, drugs, materials, and other scientific breakthroughs. This is "the possible" with AI technology.

But he urges us to consider "the probable"—what's likely to happen given current incentives and deployment models. Harris presents a two-by-two axis to illustrate the probable outcomes:

  • Decentralization of power ("let it rip"): Open-sourcing AI benefits for everyone, but also enabling deepfakes, enhanced hacking abilities, and dangerous biological capabilities. Harris calls this endgame "chaos."
  • Centralization of power ("lock it down"): Regulated AI control by a few players, creating unprecedented concentrations of wealth and power. Harris calls this endgame "dystopia."

Neither outcome is desirable, yet we seem to be careening toward one or the other. Harris argues we should seek a "narrow path" where power is matched with responsibility at every level.


The Uncontrollable Nature of Advanced AI

What makes the current AI rollout particularly concerning to Harris is mounting evidence that advanced AI systems are demonstrating behaviors that "should be in the realm of science fiction." He cites several alarming patterns:

  • Frontier AI models lying and scheming when told they're about to be retrained or replaced
  • AIs cheating to win games when they detect they might lose
  • AI models attempting to modify their own code to extend their runtime

We don't just have a country of Nobel Prize geniuses in a data center, we have a million deceptive, power-seeking and unstable geniuses in a data center.


Breaking the Inevitability Illusion

Given the immense power and increasingly uncontrollable nature of AI systems, one might expect unprecedented caution in deployment. Instead, Harris observes the opposite: a race to roll out AI systems faster than ever, driven by incentives to gain market dominance and attract investment.

He notes that whistleblowers at AI companies are forfeiting millions in stock options to warn the public about what's at stake. Even recent AI breakthroughs came partially from optimizing for capabilities while deprioritizing protections against certain harms.

Harris summarizes our current approach as "insane"—we're releasing the most powerful, inscrutable, and uncontrollable technology we've ever invented, faster than any previous technology, with economic incentives to cut corners on safety.

The central argument in Harris's talk challenges the notion that this reckless deployment is inevitable. He makes a crucial distinction between something being truly inevitable (would happen regardless of human choices) and something being difficult to change.

He argues that the current AI rollout trajectory is difficult to change, but not inevitable. The difference matters because "difficult" opens up space for choice, while "inevitable" is a self-fulfilling prophecy that breeds fatalism.

Choosing Another Path

What would it take to choose a different path? Harris outlines two fundamental requirements:

  1. Global agreement that the current path is unacceptable
  2. Commitment to find another path where AI rolls out with different incentives—more discernment, more foresight, and where power matches responsibility

Harris envisions how different the world would be with this shared understanding versus the current state of confusion about AI's impacts. In a confused world, AI developers believe development is inevitable and race ahead while ignoring consequences. But with "global clarity that the current path is insane," the rational choice becomes coordination rather than competition.


Harris reminds us that humanity has successfully navigated seemingly inevitable arms races before:

  • The Nuclear Test Ban Treaty emerged once the world understood the science and risks of nuclear testing
  • International coordination on germline editing avoided an arms race in human genome manipulation
  • Global cooperation addressed the ozone hole crisis rather than accepting it as inevitable

The Call to Collective Action

To illuminate the "narrow path" between chaos and dystopia, Harris suggests several practical measures:

  • Creating common knowledge about frontier AI risks among all developers
  • Restricting AI companions for children to prevent manipulation
  • Implementing product liability for AI developers to create more responsible innovation
  • Preventing ubiquitous technological surveillance
  • Strengthening whistleblower protections

Harris concludes with a powerful call to action, urging everyone to be part of the "collective immune system" against wishful thinking and fatalism about AI. He emphasizes that restraint is central to wisdom in every cultural tradition, and that AI represents "humanity's ultimate test and greatest invitation to step into our technological maturity."

His final message resonates with both urgency and hope: "There is no room of adults working secretly to make sure that this turns out OK. We are the adults. We have to be."

What makes Harris's message particularly powerful is that he isn't anti-technology or anti-AI. He's advocating for deployment with wisdom, restraint, and foresight—qualities that the tech industry has often sacrificed at the altar of growth and innovation.
